Main Difference between Justice League and Snyder Cut

The difference between the justice league film in 2017 and zack snyder's justice league also known as the snyder cut 

as the snyder cut has gained popularity and attention i have seen more people asking questions about what exactly is the snyder cut 

to fully understand what the snyder cuts is and how it is different to justice league we need to go back to batman v superman a film that was highly divisive by fans and critics alike when the film dropped in 2016. 

this was not schneider's full vision 

30 minutes of footage was cut from the film by warner brothers to reduce the run time 

the ultimate edition of batman v superman was announced before batman v superman even hit cinemas which includes an extra 30 minutes of footage 

so the film that we saw in the cinemas and that was criticized by many actually wasn't zack snyder's true vision of the film 

the backlash of the film made warner brothers nervous to continue with snyder's vision into justice league and so they told zack snyder and chris terrio to rewrite the justice league script which i'll let zach explain himself 

so snyder and terio had actually planned all three justice league films before batman v superman was even released 

with the rewrites snyder pushed forward into the pre-production and production of justice league which started right after the filming of batman v superman 

zach was under supervision from jeff johns who rewrote parts of the script to add in comedy 

 as well as trying to rush zach's superman's story which was supposed to be a five movie story arc from man of steel to justice league three 

whereby at the end of justice league three we would have a superman who knows who he is supposed to be and is the hopeful character that we know and love from the comics 

zack snyder wanted to create a superman that had depth and a story that you could follow over five films

 jeff johns and warner brothers however decided to change this and made snyder shoot the superman shirt rip scene which we saw in justice league which i will admit is great but it was two movies too early 

zack had planned to have this kind of scene at the end of justice league three 

then unfortunately in may 2017 during post-production zack snyder had to leave justice league as he suffered a family tragedy with the loss of his daughter autumn snyder 

this is where justice league seriously started to change 

with zack snyder leaving the project warner brothers decided to bring in avengers 1 and 2 director joss whedon to finish zach's film 

in reality whedon was brought in to change the film's tone completely 

warner brothers wanted the film to have a lighter tone which would match a marvel film whose success they were trying to compete with 

so with jeff johns and joss whedon both rewriting the film they started working on major reshoots

the difficulty they had was that warner brothers gave them a november 17th deadline as well as a two-hour runtime mandate 

that means they had seven months to almost rewrite the whole film to bring back the cast for extensive reshoots to complete all the cgi and edit the film down to two hours 

one of the biggest problems they faced was with henry cavill's contract that he had with paramount pictures which said he was unable to shave his moustache which was his character's appearance in mission impossible fallout which was the film he was working on at the time of the reshoots 

this problem led to warner brothers having to try and digitally remove the moustache from the re-shot scenes

 unfortunately for them anyone who has seen henry cavill without a moustache knows that something looks wrong with his mouth 

the big problem was that the movie would cut between snyder's mustacheless superman shots and whedon's cgi'd mouth superman 

so it became very clear which were reshoots and which were not

fortunately on may 20th 2020 zack snyder announced that his true vision of the film was going to be released in 2021 

it was later confirmed that the release date is march 18 2021 on hbo max 

so what is different between justice league 2017 and the snyder cut 

well in total the theatrical cut from 2017 had maximum 30 minutes of snyder's footage 

even with that number every single shot of snyder's scenes were either edited to be in a different location or the color grading was massively changed or people were edited out of the scenes to match with the story that the reshoots had created 

this means at least 1 hour and 30 minutes of the film was whedon's reshoots 

zack snyder's justice league has a run time of around 4 hours which means there is a 3 hours and 30 minutes of unseen footage 

the snyder cut includes characters that we never saw in theatrical cut such as darkseid dessard granny goodness martian manhunter the joker and deathstroke

 cyborg is the heart of the movie as well as we will see superman in the black suit which from the comics is the suit the superman wears when he comes back to life 

this wasn't in the theatrical cut just purely because of the same reason that they rushed the superman story 

steppenwolf will return to his original appearance that warner brothers made zack snyder change to have a child-friendly design which we saw in 2017

 the film will also be rated r or in england of 15.

 this is due to violence and strong language 

when people say that it sounds like an extended version of what we saw in 2017 it's not zack snyder won't use a single scene that was shot by joss whedon

 this will purely be zack snyder's vision

 justice league 2017 had a very child friendly story that didn't go back into the story of any of the characters or even talk about the history of the dc universe or even setting up the future of the dc universe

 for instance in zack snyder's justice league uxs which is dark side before he gains his power invades earth to try and extract the anti-life equation

 this scene will be around 20 minutes long but in 2017 this was not only cut down to two minutes it was also changed to steppenwolf and he was there to try and change earth into looking like his home world

 another difference is that in batman v superman we see a small sequence of the nightmare future 

this is where darkseid and superman have taken over the earth 

this will be explained even more in the snyder cut with there being multiple scenes showing more of this potential future 

all connections to this film were cut off in justice league in fact almost everything relating to batman v superman was taken out of the film as warner brothers were trying to move away from snyder's vision 

if you compare the earliest of justice league trailers to ones closer to its release you can really see how they were gradually changing snyder's vision by even changing the color grading of the final battle to a completely different color 

what is also different is that now zack snyder has decided he wants to use the 4x3 aspect ratio which was how the film was shot 

justice league was shown in 16x9 which covers the entire widescreen tv which means they cropped the top and bottom of every shot for it to be 16x9 

 however i want to see zack snyder's true vision of the film and so if he wants it to be in that aspect ratio then i will fully support it and i will happily watch this film in 4x3 

fortunately we can now leave justice league in the past and focus on zack snyder's justice league which is coming out on march 18th worldwide
